27 Sep 2005 A number of observers have been pointing to oil shale as the solution to all our energy problems. If oil shale does turn out to be the resource of  Oil shale extraction is also very energy-intensive, and as such is no solution to our global warming woes. Researchers have found that a gallon of shale oil can emit as much as 50 percent more carbon dioxide than a gallon of conventional oil would over its given lifecycle from extraction to tailpipe. Oil shale is one of the so-called “unconventional raw material deposits“ and will bring radical changes to the global energy market. America is already meeting a large part of its demand from unconventional sources, i.e. solid rock, which accounted for 15 per cent of the total US natural gas consumption in 2010. Oil shale is a type of sedimentary rock that is rich in kerogen. Kerogen is a part of rock that breaks down and releases hydrocarbons when heated. Hydrocarbon s are substances made entirely of hydrogen and carbon. Petroleum and natural gas are probably the most familiar hydrocarbons. Oil shale can be extracted via surface, underground, or "in-situ" mining, in which kerogen is heated underground and pumped to the surface. All these techniques demand significantly more energy than what's required for conventional liquid oil, producing more air and global warming pollution as a result. Significant oil shale reserves also exist in the Republic of Estonia, where active oil shale deposits amount to about 9.2 billion barrels of oil. Current BLM Efforts The President’s National Energy Policy outlined a number of recommendations to diversify and increase energy supplies, encourage conservation, The oil coming out of the shale is referred to as shale oil or tight oil. However, oil shale is different than shale oil in that oil shale is essentially rock that contains a compound called

Oil shale in the United States, which is as rich as tar sand, could similarly be developed and become a vital component in America's future energy security. The Fossil Energy program in oil shale focuses on reviewing the potential of oil shale as a strategic resource for liquid fuels. Like the kerogen in oil shale, tar sands' bitumen can be upgraded to synthetic crude oil. Because developing fossil fuels from these resources is different and more intensive than traditional energy production, such as coal mining or oil and gas drilling, oil shale and tar sands are referred to as unconventional fuel sources.

Underlying most definitions of oil shale is its potential for the economic recovery of energy, including shale oil and combustible gas, as well as a number of  Oil shale has been used as an energy source for centuries. This type of unconventional reservoir proved to be challenging in terms of reservoir characterization,  Basics · Energy Resources Oil shale is essentially a petroleum source rock which has not undergone the complete thermal maturation required The unconventional shale oil resource can be transformed into liquid hydrocarbons by mining,  Oil shale is essentially an “immature” fuel source, and we are using with tougher regulations to cut emissions and efforts to switch to other energy sources. Oil shale must be mined using either underground- or surface-mining methods.
